This article presents the perception of teachers and educational support assistants about the functionality of daycare spaces. Its general objective was to identify the professionals' views regarding the functionalities of daycare centers, and, as a specific objective, to verify compliance with the legislation that regulates Early Childhood Education in Brazil and its adequacy to the educational needs in teaching daycare centers in the spaces studied. This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, developed from a Freirean perspective, valuing participatory, dialogical and humanized work. A self-administered, semi-structured questionnaire was used as an instrument for data collection. The results analysis technique was carried out by saturating the responses obtained, organizing them into categories. The results indicate that despite the advances, there is still the prevalence of a merely welfare-oriented view with regard to daycare environments. They also demonstrate difficulties for municipal managers in complying with the guidelines of national legislation for offering qualified early childhood education. There is, therefore, a long way to go in the search for the successful implementation of quality education, as well as studies that encourage the breaking of paradigms and predefined concepts about daycare centers and their entire functional structure.
