Work in the sugarcane industry has always been marked by workers being heavily exposed to overexploitation. There are countless risks involved in working in sugarcane plantations. Many of these risks lead to accidents at work, as well as the development of occupational diseases, incapacity to work and even death. Given this fact, the research aims to understand the behavior and characteristics of occupational accidents recorded in Brazilian sugarcane fields between 2012 and 2021. In order to achieve this objective, a quantitative perspective was chosen as the research approach. Secondary data from the Smartlab Platform and RAIS was used. Besides, in view of the advance of agricultural mechanization in Brazilian sugarcane plantations and the changes that have occurred in the composition of the workforce, we decided to investigate the reality of accidents based on two groups of workers - manual workers and mechanized workers. The results show a decrease in the number of accidents over the analyzed period and point to different characteristics regarding the accidents suffered by the manual and the mechanized workers. Finally, it is hoped that the information provided will provide knowledge about how such accidents occur within this new production context experienced in Brazilian sugarcane plantations in contemporary times.
