This article deals with an experience report that articulates poverty and its consequences within the context of public education in high schools in the city of Sobral-CE. The actions foster the exercise of active citizenship in the fight against various inequalities. The Laboratory for the Study of Inequalities and Diversities – o – LAEDDES works in line with the promotion of critical education for the empowerment of young people who come to know, understand and combat the structures of inequality and poverty. The methodology used is based on theoretical studies in philosophy, sociology and social psychology. The extension workers go to the schools and carry out actions that involve the presentation of the university, quota and student permanence policies, debates on education and citizenship, as well as working on the student-school relationship through affective maps, and ending with an open space for feedback and suggestions of topics for next actions. We realized that when arriving at the school, the actions are well received by the students, this is due to the non-obligation to participate in the moment, as well as the offer of a space that is built with dialogue and respect. Throughout the development of the actions, doubts arise, surprise with the information and also hope when they know that they can occupy other spaces. Therefore, overcoming the various forms of poverty requires an approach that addresses material needs and political limitations, promoting political and social inclusion. LAEDDES plays a key role in promoting an inclusive space for the development of critical skills and social awareness of these young people.
