The article discusses the evolution of cookies, since their creation in the 1990s by Lou Montulli, an engineer at Netscape. Initially designed to facilitate web browsing, cookies have become essential in personalizing and improving the online user experience. However, with technological advancement, concerns arose about the privacy and security of personal data, leading to the creation of the General Data Protection Law (LGPD) in 2018. The article emphasizes the importance of understanding the relationship between accepting cookies and protecting personal data, highlighting the lack of understanding on the part of users about the privacy implications of cookies. The research employed a comprehensive approach, including quantitative methods and detailed literature search. The text explores the fundamental principles of the LGPD for the processing of personal data, highlighting the need for transparency, security and responsibility in the collection and use of data. Furthermore, it highlights the importance of balancing technological innovation with the protection of citizens' rights in the digital age, promoting a culture of transparency and trust. It also emphasizes that data protection is an ethical and legal responsibility of companies and organizations, and highlights awareness of the use of cookies as a crucial element for a more transparent and ethical internet.
