Introduction: Guidelines are recommendations that aim to guide health professionals in making decisions regarding the treatment of health problems. This construction is based on robust scientific evidence and, subsequently, supported by the consensus of experts in the field of knowledge. Objectives: To describe the process of selecting experts for the construction of nursing guidelines for guided epicutaneous catheters in newborns. Methods: Methodological study carried out in three phases: first, Scope Review; second, systematization of evidence; and third, preparation and validation of guidelines, where the process of selecting the sample of experts was developed. Results: The selection occurred by searching for resumes on the Lattes Platform, resulting, initially, in the identification of 152 experts. The Fehring scoring system was used, resulting in 71. Through the “snowball” technique, the sample was expanded to 113. The final sample consisted of 23 experts in the first round and 15 in the second. Of these, 80% were women, with an average age of 43 years and 18 years of training. The majority of specialist nurses who implanted epicutaneous catheters (83%), with 35% guided by ultrasound. Conclusions: The process that comprised the selection of specialists for the construction of the nursing guideline for guided epicutaneous catheters in neonates proved to be feasible, but laborious to achieve. The limitation of the final sample of this Brazilian study represents the difficulty of engaging specialist nurses for the development of methodological studies, which require availability to achieve robust samples.
