Aging is a natural process that brings changes to the body, which can lead to loss of functional capacity and risk of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, the practice of aerobic and resistance physical exercise, in addition to improving functional fitness, still presents itself as a method of non-pharmacological treatment. The objective of the work was to investigate, through 18 functional training sessions, whether there was an improvement in functional physical fitness and a hypotensive effect in resistant hypertensive elderly people. This was an experimental quantitative study, carried out with resistant hypertensive elderly people in the city of Juazeiro do Norte – CE. Participants completed an anamnesis, a questionnaire to check the level of physical activity (IPAQ), the general physical fitness index was evaluated with the Senior Fitness test,The elderly were divided into Control Group (CG) and Intervention Group (IG) and were compared by analysis of variance, using the two-factor ANOVA test for repeated measures, adopting an alpha of 0.05. To verify the effect size of the intervention, Partial Eta Squared was considered. The results show significant reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure, when compared to the CG. Regarding functional physical fitness, there was an increase in muscular resistance of the lower and upper limbs, flexibility, physical mobility, flexibility of the upper limbs and aerobic endurance. It is concluded that 18 sessions of functional training induce an improvement in the general physical fitness index, in addition to reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure in resistant hypertensive patients.
