The significant increase in female incarceration and the crossings linked to this phenomenon require greater discussion on issues related to this social group. The objective was to understand the support network for caring for the children of women who are in prison and coping with separation due to incarceration. This is a qualitative study, involving ten women in prison and who had children under 15 years old living inside or outside the walls. The speeches were transcribed and systematized using the Collective Subject Discourse technique. It was evident that mothers in prison live with feelings that are linked to the pain of separation, guilt and the impacts that prison causes on their children's daily lives. From this perspective, when unable to take care of their children and faced with limitations in carrying out motherhood, the collective subject needed to transfer the responsibility for caring for their children to their support network, which is centered on the child's family members. Thus, mothering and prison are tensioned due to the barriers imposed by the prison order, making interaction with the social and emotional support network difficult, as well as the maintenance of the mother-child dyad.
