Anticonvulsants include drugs that have a broad spectrum of action, acting on the Central Nervous System. The objective of this work was to define the consumption of anticonvulsant medications and also analyze the profile of patients who use them. A retrospective, descriptive cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach was carried out in the pharmacy of Policlínica Manoel Calheiros in the municipality of Jaboatão dos Guararapes. To this end, 879 special control prescriptions retained by the pharmacy from July to December 2016 were analyzed. After processing the information, it was observed that the prescriptions were, for the most part, of internal origin (68.37%). The medical specialty that prescribed anticonvulsants the most was the general practitioner. The most prescribed therapy involved the use of carbamazepine (43%), which was the medication with the highest average consumption during the studied period. The most prevalent sex was male (57%). The majority of users were adults (66%). And the biggest expense was related to treatment with the drug valproic acid. With the results obtained, it was possible to outline the anticonvulsant consumption profile in the unit, in order to direct the pharmacist for actions in pharmaceutical assistance, as well as the rational use of these medicines.
