SCOLIOSIS, POSTURAL CHANGES AND MUSCLE FLEXIBILITY IN CHILDREN WITH AUTISTIC SPECTRUM DISORDER

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects motor development, causing deficits in communication and social interaction. Children with ASD have high rates of scoliosis and difficulties with balance, including limited coordination of the arms and legs. Objective: To analyze the prevalence of scoliosis, postural changes and muscle flexibility in children with ASD. Methodology: Cross-sectional, descriptive, quantitative study. Children aged 5 to 11 years old diagnosed with ASD and other comorbidities were included. The Scoliometer application, the Kombiuda brand BMI Tape Measure and photographic records were used as instruments for data collection. The majority of participants showed reduced muscle flexibility, only one participant achieved a degree considered for scoliosis. Regarding postural changes, the majority presented elevation of the right shoulder associated with shoulder protrusion and asymmetrical scapulae and flat feet. Asymmetric weight-bearing was also identified in almost half of the sample, predominantly in the left lower limb. The most prevalent disorder was ADHD. Investing in research in this field will facilitate the early detection of postural changes, scoliosis and muscular flexibility, enabling more effective management of these problems, enabling the prevention of major changes in adolescence and adulthood in children diagnosed with ASD.
