The present study aimed to analyze the profile and performance of CAEs in municipalities in the State of Rio de Janeiro (ERJ). A questionnaire was developed that included open and closed questions on the following topics: profile of the interviewed counsellor, characterization and attributions of the CAE, meetings of the CAE and other subjects addressed in the meetings. Descriptive statistics were used for data analysis. A total of 44 CAE from municipalities in the state of RJ participated in the study. There was a prevalence of professors in the composition of the councils. Regarding training, 55% of the counsellors had some type of training on social control, 52% had publicized the work of the CAE and 11% had participated in COMSEA. In infrastructure, most have the location, equipment, transport and human resources, however, the inadequacies of the provided infrastructure are reported. Most CAE hold monthly meetings, with 5 to 7 directors present per meeting. Most CAE have a support script during the visits and visit the UANE monthly with revisit planning. Of the topics addressed in the meetings, hygienic and sanitary conditions, infrastructure and acceptance of school meals, purchase of family farming, quality of menus, financial execution of the PNAE and “conclusive opinion of the CAE” were the most recurrent in the council meetings. Only 43% of CAEs participated in the food preparation acceptability test and reported any changes during their tenure. The CAE ERJ, in the general context, are active, but still, need to advance in aspects related to the operationalization of their functioning and the expansion of their attributions. Key words: Social Control, Public Policy , School Feeding, Food and Nutrition Security.
