Objective: To understand the perception of the nursing staff about the assistance offered to women in the postoperative period of mastectomy. Method: A qualitative study, developed from the Bardin content analysis. The participants, all of them women, were Nursing professionals (nurses, technicians and auxiliaries) who worked in post-surgical oncological care. Results: Two categories were identified: “Feelings of nursing professionals in caring for mastectomized women” and “Nursing care process for post-mastectomy women”. Through welcoming and bonding with the woman, comprehensive care and multi-professional work, the interviewees went through the care process with different feelings. Conclusion: The study showed that the nursing professional is the major foundation for the patient in the postoperative period. In addition to welcoming, bonding and integral care, empathy is essential although sentimentality can interfere with care. It is believed that from these perceptions nursing professionals can seek to improve their work habits, including the multi-professional team mutual work that is a demand of the mastectomized woman.
