Cervical Cytopathological Changes Associated with IUD Contraceptive Use

The human vagina is a microenvironment that harbors a diverse range of microorganisms,
which contribute to vaginal pH balance and protection against opportunistic pathogens.
However, because it is a dynamic environment, there may be variations in this microbiota, in
which the use of the intrauterine device (IUD) is one of the factors associated with the
appearance of bacterial vaginosis. This study aims to present a literature review on cervical
cytopathological alterations correlated with the use of the contraceptive IUD. An analysis of
articles was carried out in the PubMED, SCIELO and Google Scholar databases, in the period
between 2020 and 2024 in the languages Portuguese, English and Spanish, resulting in 33
related articles. The use of the IUD has been adhered to by more women due to its efficacy,
however, depending on the material that the device is composed of, it may be more
susceptible to the emergence of infections by Actonomyces sp., due to the cervical
cytopathological changes that the device can cause. Thus, it is essential to perform periodic
cytopathological tests in order to ensure safe use. Thus, the female population's understanding
of the importance of preventive exams is necessary for early diagnosis and treatment, since it
reveals a recurrent public health problem.
