Abstract

Gastric cancer is one of the main public health problems worldwide and although its incidence is declining, there is still a high prevalence in the country. This work sought to characterize the clinical and histopathological profile of gastric cancer in patients treated at a reference hospital in the countryside of Pernambuco. An analytical, retrospective and cross-sectional study was carried out, in which sociodemographic and clinicopathological data were evaluated from histopathological reports of patients diagnosed with gastric cancer, in the period between May 2021 and May 2023, in a reference hospital in the countryside of Pernambuco. Statistical analysis was carried out using the Chi-square test, considering a 95% confidence interval. The results of 317 gastric anatomopathological exams were evaluated, of which 77 (24%) showed gastric cancer. The most common gender was male (75.3%). There was a predominance of elderly patients, with 72.7% over 60 years old. The most affected anatomical region was the antrum (37.6%). The most evident histological type was adenocarcinoma (92.2%), these 67.6% were poorly differentiated and according to Lauren's classification, the intestinal type (46.5%) was the most common. Regarding statistical analysis, Lauren's classification was associated with the degree of differentiation and H. pylori infection. That way, gastric cancer was more prevalent in males, in the elderly, with the antrum as the main anatomical region and intestinal-type adenocarcinoma as the predominant histological pattern.
