Women's experiences regarding preventive examinations performed in Atenção Primária à Saúde (APS; in English, Primary Health Care) are shaped by past situations ("reasons-why") and expectations ("reasons-for"). Based on this perception, this work consists of a phenomenological study that seeks to understand women's knowledge and expectations regarding preventive cervical examinations. Using interviews for data collection and the theoretical-methodological framework of Alfred Schütz's sociological phenomenology, the study presents a set of "reasons-why" and "reasons-for" in women's experiences regarding the performance of preventive cervical examinations by nurses within the APS - experiences which are categorized by similarity and, from there, divided into clusters. Based on the analysis of the clusters, it was possible to establish the following "reasons-why": lack of knowledge among women regarding preventive examinations and health education related to preventive examinations in APS; and the following “reason-for”: women’s expectations for a humanized approach based on welcoming during the preventive examination. With these results, we can reflect on current nursing practices in APS and possibilities for women to have their expectations and needs met through them.
